Dear Virginia wrestling community,
I hope that everyone is healthy and ready to peak at the right time you head into State Championship series.
Right after the close of the season, there is tremendous opportunity for all wrestlers, coaches and fans to enjoy the nation’s best high school wrestling, right in your own backyard.
The 18th annual NHSCA High School Senior Nationals will be held March 30-April 1, at the new Virginia Beach Convention Center in Virginia Beach, VA.
I would like to thank the Virginia wrestling community for welcoming this event and their help in the administration of the championships.
Over the last 17 years, this event has produced a huge number of NCAA National Champions and All-Americans.
At the 2006 NCAA Division I Championships, 9 of 10 champions, 18 of 20 finalists and 72 of the 80 All-Americans were wrestlers who had competed in the NHSCA Senior Nationals when they were in high school. The top guys at the next level were all in this event when they were high school seniors. During the past two Olympic Games in freestyle, the United States has only had two gold medalists; Brandon Slay and Cael Sanderson. Both of them wrestled in the senior nationals when they were HS seniors. Olympians Stephen Abas, Eric Guerrero, Daniel Cormier and more wrestled in this event when they were in high school – and several of them did not win it.
The event is currently in serious negotiations to be shown live on national TV. The Senior Nationals is probably the truest national high school championship in any high school sport in America. Don’t miss your chance to be a part of it. You must be a senior and a state champion or runner-up at some point in your career to participate. There is a separate championship for juniors, sophomores and freshmen listed below.

Last year, the HS Junior and Sophomore Nationals were held in conjunction with the Senior Nationals and were a very big success. There were almost 800, 11th and 10th graders in the top-notch event from 43 states. 83% of the juniors were state champs, placers or qualifiers in their home state. 11 of the 14 champions from the juniors event signed scholarships early with NCAA D I schools. Over 100 of the total junior entries already signed with NCAA D I schools in the early signing period alone.
The difference with the underclassmen events and the Senior Nationals is that they remain open to the multiple-time state champion and the underdog alike.
This year’s championships for the underclassmen are held in conjunction with the Senior Nationals and will be wrestled from March 28-30, 2007.

Due to the volume of requests from our member coaches, there will be a separate division for freshman this year as well.
You may want to visit our web site at www.nhsca.com to see the past results of the Championships as well as follow the entries for this year that will be updated daily. This event is the premier high school wrestling event in the United States. For the Senior Nationals alone, 854 wrestlers and more than 950 high school coaches from 48 states participated in this event last year. The field included 18 four-time state champions, 57 three-time state champions, 224 two-time state champions, and more than 300 one-time state champions.
One National Champion will be crowned in each weight class. The top eight place finishers in each weight class are officially declared High School Senior All-Americans.
There were 215 college coaches in attendance last year including the top 25 Division I programs in the country. A college recruiting fair will be held at the Cavalier Hotel (headquarters hotel) for wrestlers, parents, and coaches to meet with the college coaches on Sunday prior to the finals.
The headquarters hotel for the event is the Cavalier Hotel. Their rates are as low as $75 / night (single). This is a very upscale hotel on the beachfront. You must reference the NHSCA HS Nationals to get the $75 rate. Regular rates in the spring and summer are around $179-$199. Contact them at 757-425-8555. Southwest Airlines has cheap flights into Norfolk (VA) - which is a short drive to VA Beach.
The 2007 Senior Nationals will feature tremendous clinics by NCAA coaches J Robinson (#1 Minnesota) and Tom Ryan (Ohio State). Mixed martial arts (MMA) superstar Renzo Gracie will also do an entertaining clinic on submissions and chokes for those interested in self-defense or MMA competitions.
The beautiful beach location will ensure that everyone has a lot of fun outside of the competition - in addition to the great wrestling.
Please go to www.nhsca.com if you have any interest in the above opportunities.
I would like to wish you and your team a very successful finish to the regular season.
Sincerely,
Joe Boardwine
